Confidence to step forward, one stone at a time
We serve young people at one of life's most vulnerable crossroads — the transition into adulthood. Every program we offer exists to make that crossing safer, warmer, and more hopeful.
Young people preparing to leave care deserve more than survival — they deserve a bridge to adulthood, with caring adults walking beside them every step of the way.
Young adults finding their footing without a safety net learn the everyday skills many people take for granted — budgeting, cooking, transportation, and finding steady housing.
Young parents building safe, stable homes for their children get practical tools, encouragement, and a community that believes in them.
Our story
I aged out of foster care and learned firsthand how many everyday skills — budgeting a paycheck, cooking a meal, finding a safe place to sleep — nobody teaches you when you're suddenly on your own. Years later, as a therapeutic foster mother, I watched that same gap repeat with the young people I walked beside. Stepping Out exists so no young person has to figure out adulthood alone.
Mary Anne Krieger - "Annie", Founder — former foster youth and therapeutic foster mother
Stepping Out Independence Program was born from that experience — from the belief that young people deserve more than survival. They deserve opportunities to learn, practice, grow, and prepare for the responsibilities of adulthood with guidance from caring adults and community partners.
As a developing Ohio nonprofit, we're building this work steadily — one class, one mentor, one community partner at a time.
Our programs are hands-on and practical — because confidence grows from real practice, real meals, real budgets, and real wins.
Small-group classes that teach the everyday skills adulthood demands: budgeting and financial literacy, cooking, household management, employment readiness, entrepreneurship, responsibility and leadership, transportation planning, and housing readiness.

Amboy United Methodist Church
A supportive community program where adults practice independent-living skills side by side — planning, budgeting, and building steady routines with encouragement from mentors.
Our future vision
Today's programs are the first stones on the path. We're building toward a longer bridge for our community:
Keeping young people housed before crisis hits
Pathways to safe, steady places to call home
Essentials for youth entering and transitioning through care
Skills, apprenticeships, and career on-ramps
A future home combining practical education, mentoring, and supportive living
