Stepping stones crossing calm water toward soft morning light

Our story

Every step began with one.

Stepping Out began with one woman's promise: no young person should have to figure out adulthood alone. This is how that promise became a community.

A developing Ohio nonprofit — serving Ashtabula County and surrounding communities

I aged out of foster care and learned firsthand how many everyday skills — budgeting a paycheck, cooking a meal, finding a safe place to sleep — nobody teaches you when you're suddenly on your own. Years later, as a therapeutic foster mother, I watched that same gap repeat with the young people I walked beside. Stepping Out exists so no young person has to figure out adulthood alone.

From one woman's promise to a community's mission

Four chapters — from aging out alone, to walking beside young people, to building something that lasts.

Where it began

Aging out, on her own

Mary Anne Krieger — "Annie" — knows what it feels like to step into adulthood without a safety net. She aged out of foster care and learned firsthand how many everyday skills — budgeting a paycheck, cooking a meal, finding a safe place to sleep — nobody teaches you when you're suddenly on your own.

The world doesn't pause while you figure it out. Rent comes due, jobs ask for experience, and the smallest decisions carry the weight of a whole future. Annie made it through — but she never forgot how hard it was to do it without a steady hand beside her.

The gap she saw again

Walking beside young people

Years later, as a therapeutic foster mother, Annie watched that same gap repeat with the young people she walked beside — capable, resilient young people who simply hadn't been given the chance to practice the everyday skills adulthood demands.

Watching determined kids stumble over the same missing pieces she once faced, she began to see a pattern that couldn't be luck: the gap wasn't about effort. It was about opportunity.

The decision to act

Stepping Out is born

Stepping Out Independence Program was born from that experience — from the belief that young people deserve more than survival. They deserve opportunities to learn, practice, grow, and prepare for the responsibilities of adulthood with guidance from caring adults and community partners.

So Annie started building: programs that teach by doing, relationships that stay steady, and a community where every young person has someone in their corner.

Where we are now

Building, one step at a time

Today, Stepping Out is a developing Ohio nonprofit serving Ashtabula County and surrounding communities. Our programs are growing one step at a time: Kids Care Crew and the Steppin' Out Jr. Young Entrepreneurs Club at the Conneaut Youth Center, Adult Independence sessions at Amboy United Methodist Church, and the Creek Rd Kids Bridge — Katie's founding initiative at the Covered Bridge Festival.

Behind the scenes, we're laying groundwork for what comes next — an Independence Warehouse and, down the road, a full Independence Campus — so that one day every young person in our community can find every kind of support under one roof.

We're building steadily — one class, one mentor, one community partner at a time. And every step is taken with the same conviction Annie started with: no young person should have to figure out adulthood alone.

A caring adult and a young person sharing a warm moment together

Our mission

To walk beside foster youth, vulnerable young adults, and young families in Ashtabula County as they build the practical skills, steady relationships, and confidence they need for independence — one achievable step at a time.

What we believe

Practical by design

Confidence grows from real practice — real budgets, real meals, real wins. We teach the way life actually works.

Steady relationships

Every young person deserves caring adults who show up consistently — not just once, but for the whole journey.

Community powered

Independence is built in community. Neighbors, churches, businesses, and families all have a role to play.

Dignity and hope

We meet every young person with respect for where they are and belief in where they can go.
